Joel vê-se obrigado a regressar à casa de infância para ajudar a mãe, Monika, que, após sofrer um AVC, começa a dar os primeiros sinais de demência. Quanto mais tempo passa com ela, mais Joel se convence de que Monika não regressou intacta do seu breve encontro com o anjo da morte. Esta destemida incursão cinematográfica enfrenta a feroz e terrivelmente humana aversão à mudança trazida pela doença e pela velhice, explorando o lar de terceira idade como um espaço não de permanência, mas já de transição, onde os residentes se convertem em entidades capazes de nos fazer vislumbrar a inevitável degeneração de todas as coisas. Com um pé aqui e outro no além, o sueco Mattias Johansson Skoglund esculpe um olhar honesto, munido de um existencialismo arrepiante, que, distante do universo do sangue e das entranhas, nomeia o medo da morte como o único e o mais fidedigno bicho-papão.
Joel is forced to return to his childhood home to care for his mother, Monika, who, after suffering a stroke, begins to show the first signs of dementia.
