Após a morte do patriarca da família, Barbara e Megan, mãe e filha, enfrentam o colapso da sua já fracturada relação. Quando Barbara decide, unilateralmente, recorrer a um perfeito desconhecido para que, através de um ritual, traga o seu marido de volta à vida, as duas terão de se unir e fazer frente a forças ocultas potencialmente letais. Os mortos nunca andam longe nesta sombria contemplação em torno da perda e do trauma geracional, já que é na dinâmica mãe-filha que a realizadora e argumentista Julia Max encontra a âncora para o seu primeiro filme. Uma sensação de desgraça iminente permeia esta obra que, nunca se afastando da casa da família, o berço de tudo o que ficou por dizer, contém em si momentos tão tenebrosos quanto mundanos, e é no alcance desse equilíbrio que aproveita para nos fazer questionar: poderá a maldição ser também a cura? Representa o luto o maior dos horrores, ou será a nossa incapacidade de lidar com ele ainda mais temível? Um filme que é pura terapia de terror.
After the death of the family patriarch, Barbara and Megan — mother and daughter — face the collapse of their already fractured relationship. When Barbara unilaterally decides to enlist a complete stranger to bring her husband back through a ritual, the two must come together to confront potentially deadly occult forces. The dead are never far in this dark meditation on loss and generational trauma, as writer-director Julia Max finds the emotional anchor of her debut feature in the mother-daughter dynamic. A sense of impending doom seeps through the film, which never strays from the family home — the cradle of everything left unsaid — and is filled with moments as quietly harrowing as they are mundane. It’s in striking this balance that the film dares to ask: could the curse also be the cure? Is grief the greatest of horrors, or is our inability to confront it even more terrifying? A film that is pure therapeutic horror.
